New Yorkers: I’ll be at two comics events this weekend! For two different tastes. 

On Saturday I’m at the Grand Comics Festival, a small - FREE to attend! - show in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. There’s a lot of great local talent on the roster, so definitely drop by if you’re in the area.

For those with more corporate tastes, I’ll be at NYCC Special Edition on Sunday in Manhattan at Pier 94! This is actually a 2-day show, but I will NOT be there on Saturday, opting for the above-mentioned show! Come find me at Artist Alley table K16.

Do you consciously try and balance the "sillier" parts of the comic -- like the juicebox bar gag -- with the plot elements, or is it more natural and intuitive than that? (Or is that not even a distinction you think about?)

I get kinda embarrassed when dramatic moments land with a thud, and I try to use humor to avoid that. The content is just too light to be taken that seriously.

There’s also practical applications… in that particular scene I don’t want Jane to be drunk, and I don’t want the reader to be as depressed with the scene as she is. With humor I don’t need to justify either of those choices!! 

I also find pedantry in comics kinda embarrassing, so if I can make a joke instead of raising unimportant questions about How We Got Here I’ll always opt for the former.

I’m headed to Small Press Expo! I’ll be exhibiting at table E10A with Mike Holmes. I have something pretty unique this year – a totally new Octopus Pie story in minicomic form!

I’ve always wanted to do one before SPX, and this year it finally happened over sweat and tears, etc etc. This story is about Hanna and Marigold in college. 16 pages long, 5bux!

You can’t read it anywhere except this little book, so come get a copy! According to Ella, it’s a very comfortable story to nap on. Just follow the friendly Hanna face.

I haven’t updated the Eves timeline in a while so here’s a 2015 version. As you can see, not very much has changed since 2013. Except of course that the technology for color comics was born, ushering in a new age of visual entertainment.

I’ve almost got a complete set of 10 Eves! At which point I’ll agonize over what I’ve been doing for a decade, and receive a free ice cream cone.

Superficially a lot is different, but I think it’s always been the same. I imagined it as this episodic framework where I could explore a variety of topics without the commitment of a sprawling epic. Even in the earlier sitcom-y stories that had no bearing on real life, I was trying to unpack something. 

Probably the biggest difference is I’ve learned to tap into my subconscious a bit more. I used to take a lot more influence from pop culture and what I perceived as successful art/writing. 

oh and I really thought Eve would die more often. I thought I’d probably kill Eve at least every year or so. In that way I am a disappointment to myself.

Is it mean to say this ask is cute? haha. Sorry you miss Eve. Right now I have a bit more to say with other characters or with the whole cast as an ensemble. She’ll be back in the next arc with plenty of problems.
