Two Events in May – Toronto and Portland!

I will be at Toronto Comic Arts Festival on May 13th + 14th. I’ll have OP volumes, copies of the B9 art book, minicomics, and some original art. As usual I’ll be upstairs in the webcomics area with TopatoCo.

Octopus Pie is super good, but I feel like you've been on a tear this year especially, with a lot of really groundbreaking or amazing strips. Do they feel different when you're making them or do you only realize it when you finish? What pushes you to keep levelling up your craft?

You’re very kind David! Is there a humble way to answer this. haha.

The more ambitious strips do feel like my best work when they go up. By the time they’re finished they’ve passed through a few trusted filters over the course of weeks. I throw away a lot of ideas that don’t resonate personally; a lot of the time they morph into something more personal as they go. Mike gives me a lot of useful feedback while I’m working out the script - usually, what to trim away. I trust his tastes, and if he thinks I’ve got something, I feel really good about developing it.

Having an increasingly clear vision of the final product has helped a lot, even though a portion of the process is out of my hands. Working with Valerie has made me think about color as part of the storytelling, and I trust her to interpret my notes with her own aesthetic. She experiments a lot too, with results I think are a large part of the level-uppedness.

Making comics has felt like an intimate form of communication for a while now. I feel vulnerable showing them off, or frustrated when they don’t read correctly, or very loved when people can relate. I don’t know if that will always result in improved quality, but it feels right to trust in this process.

I’m headed to Small Press Expo! I’ll be exhibiting at table E10A with Mike Holmes. I have something pretty unique this year – a totally new Octopus Pie story in minicomic form!

I’ve always wanted to do one before SPX, and this year it finally happened over sweat and tears, etc etc. This story is about Hanna and Marigold in college. 16 pages long, 5bux!

You can’t read it anywhere except this little book, so come get a copy! According to Ella, it’s a very comfortable story to nap on. Just follow the friendly Hanna face.

Superficially a lot is different, but I think it’s always been the same. I imagined it as this episodic framework where I could explore a variety of topics without the commitment of a sprawling epic. Even in the earlier sitcom-y stories that had no bearing on real life, I was trying to unpack something. 

Probably the biggest difference is I’ve learned to tap into my subconscious a bit more. I used to take a lot more influence from pop culture and what I perceived as successful art/writing. 

oh and I really thought Eve would die more often. I thought I’d probably kill Eve at least every year or so. In that way I am a disappointment to myself.

It’s true that Octopus Pie is ending. There are 2 chapters left (after the current one, which is almost over). They will both be fairly dense, as there is a large cast to cover, some ends to tie up. I’m not sure exactly the length, but my rough estimate from today is about 6 months.

It’s a webcomic, so who can say I won’t get a wild hair and stretch things out. But OP’s 10th anniversary is May 14th, 2017; I’ve promised myself it will run no longer than that.

Thanks for asking - I’ve been wanting an opportunity to clarify! I’ve seen a lot of people eulogizing already, but I’ve got lots planned, and it’s going to be fun. You’ll love it.
