I’ve talked to a lot of people who are new to Adventure Time but enjoy the comic, so yes, I think so! Suspend your typical amount of disbelief for fantasy stories and you’re good.
That said, watch the show because it’s the best!

I really enjoy limitations, either self-imposed or laid out by others. It was great figuring out the Adventure Time characters, a real challenge at first before it gradually felt more natural. I watched the show and read the AT wiki exhaustively for months, and it still took a long while to feel PB and Marceline out.
Working with my editor at BOOM really helped me tighten up my comics, I think. I knew I had to impress Shannon so I made my layouts as clear as possible and simplified dialogue wherever I could. Each chapter was strictly 15 pages and no more, so I had to keep a pace with it. When I’m working on my webcomics, I can stretch out a story too far or get lazy with the art. My plan going forward is to pretend I’m still sending comics to Shannon.

Art was a real challenge with Scream Queens! It was the biggest comic project I’d done in years that wasn’t Octopus Pie, so figuring out the new style took a bit of work. It was a few issues before things started to gel, I think. I’m glad I had the chance to do it — I’ve learned a lot from the way Adventure Time is drawn, and I think it’s followed me back to OP.
I had a lot of fun writing the story. Before the first issue ran I already had most big plot points written out: Marcy’s creative woes, PB + Marcy’s relationship, Guy’s backstory, king Jake’s rise and fall. And I tried to hit as many other interesting/funny notes as possible along the way.
When you’re dealing with characters that have such a dedicated fandom - characters with whom people identify so closely - it’s not easy to satisfy everyone. So I did my best to navigate PB & Marcy through some more broadly relatable themes. Anxiety, depression, self-worth, accepting the love and compassion of others. And y'know, butts and partyin’.

My awful secret as a cartoonist is I don’t get around to reading many comics, aside from my post-convention haul. Most of my inspiration comes from music and TV. Lately I’ve really enjoyed HBO’s John Adams series, Girls, Adventure Time, and Out of the Vinyl Deeps, a book of essays on 60s/70s rock by Ellen Willis.
As far as comics go I’m starting to read Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys, which is brilliant so far. It drives me crazy how good the layouts are.
