People keep telling me that I have to move to New York or LA to get a job in animation, but I can't possibly afford to even move anywhere until I get my job situation figured out. I've been sending resumes to a bunch of companies for years without any real result, and I'm afraid of getting trapped in networking limbo for the rest of my life. Am I a coward for not throwing away all my money and taking the big risk, or am I being reasonable?

It’s so tough to get started, and I understand your frustration. I agree you shouldn’t move before you’re hired, that’s bananas! If job applications aren’t popping off, I’d recommend working on a short film. I’ve never worked on an animation project without finding new ways to improve. It’s something you can show off on your next round of applications, and it’s FUN.

I was lucky to get animation work after school, but nobody wanted to hire or publish me for comics until I’d done it for years on my own. It just never hurts to do this.
