Back when I was writing Marceline #3, I asked my ultra talented friend and roomie MC Frontalot if he could punch up a diss song I was writing for Marceline. He took my very busted words and turned it into beautiful rap lyrics, complete with a demo.

Ultimately it seemed more appropriate for Marceline to be singing than rapping, and I once again chopped up Front’s modified lyrics and put them into a song. I’m still very fond of (and awed by) this little recording, though. Enjoy!

I can’t spoil or heavily contradict plot points in the show, but otherwise I’ve been given a lot of freedom. Which I think is rare with licensed characters, and it makes the whole thing way more fun! If I drew the characters hyper-realistic or with butt faces I might get some concerned notes.

I really enjoy limitations, either self-imposed or laid out by others. It was great figuring out the Adventure Time characters, a real challenge at first before it gradually felt more natural. I watched the show and read the AT wiki exhaustively for months, and it still took a long while to feel PB and Marceline out.

Working with my editor at BOOM really helped me tighten up my comics, I think. I knew I had to impress Shannon so I made my layouts as clear as possible and simplified dialogue wherever I could. Each chapter was strictly 15 pages and no more, so I had to keep a pace with it. When I’m working on my webcomics, I can stretch out a story too far or get lazy with the art. My plan going forward is to pretend I’m still sending comics to Shannon.
